The results are in! Claire, Andrew and Owen were blown away by the young writers and artists who entered the poetry competition. So, here’s Claire to do the honours with a wee message (on behalf of all the judges)!

We all really enjoyed going through the entries, reading your poems and admiring the accompanying pictures. Lots of talent out there 🙂 Well done!

We found it hard to judge lots of very good entries, and in the end, we made a shortlist from which we then chose the winner and two runner-ups. We judged across a range of factors including the content, how it was written, how it would work as a song and how it would relate to other people singing and listening to it as well.

We saw two recurring themes in the entries – lockdown related experiences, both positive and challenging (unsurprisingly, but also good, as often poem and songs reflect-out feelings and experiences) and … sweets! There were also some lovely entries based on nature, adventure and imagination, rainbow smiles, music, personal experiences and more.

Each entry had so many good points, and we’ll try to share a few of these with each of you.

But, the results are as follows…!

Runners Up:

A Day’s Work by Lewis Easton, age 11

When in “Lockdown”, what to do?
Unfortunately, I have home schooling to do!
Out the window the sun outside is shining,
When I am finished the trampoline will be bouncing!

A day’s work when will it end,
A day’s work, oh how to spend!
Work, Work, Work, that is what I do,
At least a day’s work teaches me something new!

Maths, English and History too,
Lots of writing, learning something new,
From World War 2 to Currency Exchange,
I need to get through all this before it rains,

A day’s work when will it end,
A day’s work, oh how to spend!
Work, Work, Work, that is what I do,
At least a day’s work teaches me something new!

The last subject is about to end,
In Drama we always try and pretend,
Pretending is over no more work to do!
I am away outside to play, but with who???

A day’s work when will it end,
A day’s work, oh how to spend!
Work, Work, Work, that is what I do,
At least a day’s work teaches me something new!

In the Garden by Olivia Grieve, age 6

I see a bird flapping its wings
and
when I look closely they do different things
I hear birds singing woo woo woo
and
I see a plane go whoopsie woo
I see clouds nice and white
and
because they are in the sky they are at a high height
I smell a flower it smells like buttercups
and
when I do excersises I do some push-ups
I see the sun it is nice when it sets
When we are in the garden it is fun with our pets

The Winner

Hello! by Molly Barrett, age 11

Hello is the best word you could say to a friend.
Hello is the word that never ever ends.
Hello on its own is a beam of happiness,
Brightening your day with lots of gladness.

Hello, Hi, Hiya to you,
Call your friend out of the blue.
Hello, Hi, Hiya to you,
Call your friend out of the blue.

Hello is a melody of fun,
Never, ever finished or done.
Do the right thing and pick up the phone,
Say that word and do not be alone.

Hello, Hi, Hiya to you,
Call your friend out of the blue.
Do what`s right and make someone’s day bright,
Let’s say Hello!

We’ll be in touch to arrange the prizes and thanks so much again to everyone who entered – well done!
