Music Tells a Story

Get ready to become authors, composers and performers…

Have you ever noticed that music makes things far more exciting or dramatic when it’s added to anything you watch, from the news headlines, to films and cartoons? Why not have a go at creating your very own soundtrack to an original story that you write, or for one already written that you love?

This is something that anyone can get involved with; in schools or at home. You’ll discover that practically any object can be made musical, so use whatever you have to hand, plus plenty of imagination! If you’re learning an instrument, we encourage you to play that, too. The project is about self-expression, so the creative process is more important than how the actual music turns out – any sounds you produce will lift words from the page.

Music Tells a Story has been broken down into sections making it easy to follow: Introduction, Chapter One (Get Inspired), Chapter Two (Write your Story), Chapter Three (Find your Sound) and The End (Share your Story)! It:

  • Promotes listening, writing, art, creative and performance skills
  • Ties in nicely with themes you might be exploring at school or your favourite hobbies at home
  • Requires no previous musical experience or instruments
  • Is flexible – there’s no set time frame or end date, take on the challenge whenever you like!

Please note that COVID-19 restrictions may prevent the use of wind instruments in the classroom – always check and adhere to guidelines before starting.
